Dealing with procrastination

Maybe later...

Do you find it difficult for you to get the day started? Do you often hit the snooze button several times when you wake up? Do you just finish some work with great difficulty? Are you often unorganized with your time? Do you always leave the most difficult tasks for last? Do you accumulate pending tasks until the deadline? Do you feel more productive when your assignment´s deadline approaches?

Well, it is possible that you are falling into the habit of procrastinating: synonymous with postponing, leaving for later. It is, in general, the custom of not doing the tasks that must be performed within the time frame. And the causes for this behavior can be diverse. Among the most common are lack of self-discipline, weakness of will, and difficulty in setting priorities and managing time.

Still, it is common for the procrastinator to get used to underestimating the importance of the task due to its apparent ease or to overestimate the time left to perform it. This is usually related to excessive self-confidence, which also leads to a false sense of self-control and security.

What to do in order to avoid procrastination?

Review what you tell yourself and how you maintain behaviors that will lead you to failure. Attitudes such as procrastination become a strong barrier. Some examples of procrastination are phrases such as: “Just five more minutes”, “I’ll be early tomorrow and start”, “I’m just going to get some rest and then I’ll feel more excited to work”, “I’ll do it later”, or “I don’t have enough information to start yet.”

People need to find out when procrastination has taken over their routine, to try to be more proactive. The important thing is that the person realizes this weakness and then proposes to himself a plan for improvement. When procrastination is no longer the exception, but the rule, productive capacity and performance in general are affected, which can lead to unfavorable consequences at a professional and personal level.

Tips :

Try to identify a pattern or reason in your procrastination. Reflect: when and why do you usually procrastinate?

Notice if you are embracing too many tasks at once. If you are, start turning down some demands and assigning certain chores

Divide a large activity into several small tasks. You will notice that the difficulty in performing it tends to decrease

Avoid procrastinating when you notice you're having this behavior. Take a deep breath, drink some water, think about how it might affect you and try to pick up the pace.

Block external stimuli. Do not leave the television on or the cell phone too close. They can disrupt your focus and concentration.

The beginning of the process can be quite challenging, but little by little things get back on track and the results will start to appear.
