7 Steps to Successful Goal Setting

Yep, it is easy enough to set goals, right? We all know what we want, our desires and what we want to achieve in life. But how can you fulfill your goals? And how can you make them last?

First of all, you must be willing to give it a go! You must be willing to do the work involved to make it happen. Nothing worth in life is going to happen out of the blue, without any effort or skill involved. Yes, skill. We are all good at something, we all have something to offer, the problem is, we don’t really set goals to where we want to go in life, or if we do (normally New Year’s resolutions) we drop them in a heartbeat, or when the ‘going gets tough’.

Potential + desire creates success. It’s a simple equation. But you also need a plan. Let’s check it:

1. Identify your goal.

You need a target and it needs to be clear, or else you’ll never hit it. You need to set specific goals, you must be able to list them and envision them. If you’re aiming for success you can’t just write that down on a piece of paper, because you won’t be able to break it down to steps, meaning – you won’t even know where to start.

Set a goal and be specific on the targets. You need to be as detailed as possible, like: ‘to increase my income in 150%’. The goal also needs to be realistic and achievable, so you can reach your full potential.

2. List the benefits of your goal

Imagine you have reached your goal, what did you gain from it? What are the benefits of reaching what you’ve always dreamed of? And again, be realistic, if you have no personal gains your motivation will fail eventually.

Also remember that life-changing goals take time, you might reach some challenges, and some bumps along the road but you need to keep focused and move forward. Being solution-oriented is the best plan when it comes to the road – any obstacle is just an opportunity to persevere.

3. Identify the obstacles

This is as important as detailing the steps towards your goal. Of course, there will be some hardship – anything worth having in life always does – but most of them can be anticipated so you can prepare yourself in advance to overcome what’s coming. So, write down all the things you think could be a challenge and prevent you from reaching that goal.

4. Skills and knowledge needed to reach that goal

“Knowledge sets you free” is not just Brisk’s pretty slogan – knowledge is power, it opens doors and sets you on the path you need to be towards your success. And skills are the tools you need to get there. It’s like knowledge is the road and skills are the car you need to cross it! That’s a powerful combination and you need to know what skills and knowledge are required to reach your goal.

5. Identify who can help

Here ‘who’ stands for people, organizations, groups, whatever you think can be of help with the knowledge and/or skills you need. Sometimes you don’t really need to have all the knowledge yourself, you can just surround yourself with the right people. If your goal is to learn English, for example, you need to identify the school and teacher that can help you reach that goal and give you valuable advice along the road. Always surround yourself with the best professionals, even though they are a little more expensive, remember this is an investment in your dream and that we normally get what we pay for.

6. Develop a Plan

This is the most important step; it involves critical thinking through the details of how you will reach success. Sometimes it is even better to ask someone else for help, someone impartial that can help you see where your emotion might cloud your judgement.

You basically need to detail everything from the starting point. Create a step-by-step list to help you visualize what you need to do and set up a timeline for each step of the plan.

7. Set a deadline

Yes, you need a deadline. If you don’t set one, you might as well postpone your goal, your dreams, to when you retire. But a realistic completion date can set you up on that step-by-step for completing your goal. This will make your plan much more effective because it’s a sort of accountability. If you don’t set that date, there will be no one collecting so why should you even start?

Some goals in life require personal sacrifice, dedication, time and effort, but everything is worth while if it’s your goal, your dream, something you wish to accomplish, so be certain about your attitude and motivation as you set those goals and plan your future.
